College Visits
Visiting a college campus of your choice is one of the most crucial steps in preparing to go to college. You can't just read about a college and say that you like it. It's all about the atmosphere. Once you've narrowed down your college choices and before you send in your application, give the college a call to schedule a visit. This is reccomended because typically you are interviewed by an Academic Counselor to discuss career decisions; you may also get to sit in on a class that is relevant to your intended area of study plus participate in a tour of the campus, often with a free meal (usually lunch). Sometimes there are even free tickets to a sporting event! Besides, if you just go to the campus and see all of the buildings, you may be intimitated. Having someone who knows the campus well and will be able to answer your questions will make the experience more fun and less stressful. Most colleges offer a 'group' tour which basically means that you will have a small number of prospective students (just like you!) touring the campus together. After the tour you may attend a 'Question/Answer' session where (usually) a panel of students will try to answer any questions you have. However, agendas vary from college to college.
If at all possible, try to attend a "College Weekend." Not only will you participate in everything mentioned above, but the school organizations often have booths for you to check out. Take advantage of this time to learn about all of the sororities, fraternities, clubs and activities that are available on campus. Not only will you learn more about campus life, but it is a sure way to meet new people with common interests!
Things to Bring With You
- Your Transcript. Often application fees are waived when you apply during a visit. Hey, who doesn't want so save $30.00?
- Questions about the campus. College is a new experience, and you should go prepared to ask questions! Can Freshmen have cars? What kind of financial aid is available through the university? Be prepared to ask questions.
- Comforable walking shoes and appropriate clothing. Nobody wants to be walking around campus wearing high heels or painful sandals! Ouch! What about the weather? You don't want to be 'under dressed' and freeze all day or wear too many pairs of long underwear and swelter in the classroom. Dressing in layers is a good idea. Remember, weather can change at the drop of hat, so pack accordingly!
